Many families take the entire week off, treating it like a mini spring break in the fall. With direct flights from Minneapolis to some of the country’s most scenic destinations, it’s easier than ever to get away. Whether you’re looking for outdoor adventure in Montana or a relaxing coastal escape on California’s stunning central coast, there’s something for every traveler this MEA season.

Montana: Exploring Small Towns and the Bitterroot Valley

Montana offers an ideal mix of outdoor adventure, history, and small-town charm. With direct flights to Missoula and Bozeman on Delta, travelers have easy access to the scenic Bitterroot Valley and nearby towns offering activities for all ages.

Missoula

Missoula blends art, history, and outdoor activities. I stayed at The Wren, a retro-modern motor lodge that’s centrally located for easy access to both downtown and outdoor adventures. For a midday meal, stop by Tagliare Delicatessen, a local favorite known for its sandwiches. My pick, the Misfit, combines turkey, soppressata, garlic aioli, fig-walnut chutney, and Swiss cheese, all toasted to perfection.

After fueling up, visit the Missoula Art Museum for a dose of contemporary art, then head to the Carousel for Missoula at Caras Park, a great spot for family fun. For a taste of Montana’s outdoor beauty, take a short drive to Dunrovin Ranch in Lolo, where you can enjoy guided horseback rides through the stunning Bitterroot Valley.

If fishing is more your speed, head to Hamilton for fly fishing along the Bitterroot River. I spent a memorable morning with Bitterroot Fly Company, catching six fish, including a 17-inch cutthroat trout. Afterward, make a stop in Stevensville—Montana’s first permanent settlement—where St. Mary’s Mission offers a glimpse into the state’s history. For a refreshing drink, stop by Blacksmith Brewing for local craft beer or The Montana Distillery for creative cocktails like the Railroad Thai, made with ginger vodka and coconut milk.

Just south in Darby, the Double H Custom Hat Company crafts custom cowboy hats, including those worn by the cast of Yellowstone. While access to Chief Joseph Ranch, the real-life Dutton Ranch where the show was filmed, is reserved for guests staying at the ranch, fans can still drive by the iconic entrance and snap a picture. For an extra taste of Yellowstone, stop by Glen’s Cafe in Florence, which was featured in the show, and enjoy a meal reminiscent of the hearty dishes you’d expect on the ranch.

After a day of adventure, continue exploring the Bitterroot Valley with a stay at ABC Acres, a farm offering immersive experiences like farm tours and animal interactions. It’s an excellent way for families to connect with Montana’s natural beauty while learning about sustainable farming practices in a serene, hands-on environment.

Bozeman

Bozeman is an excellent hub for exploring both natural wonders and small-town attractions. Start your adventure with a visit to the Museum of the Rockies, known for its vast dinosaur fossil collection, and then head to the Montana Science Center for interactive exhibits that engage both kids and adults alike.

If you’re craving outdoor adventure, drive to the Lewis and Clark Caverns for a guided tour through impressive limestone caves, then head to the Drinking Horse Trail for a hike with stunning views of the surrounding area. Afterward, unwind at Bozeman Hot Springs, with multiple pools for relaxation.

For a historic touch, take a road trip to Virginia City, a well-preserved mining town offering a glimpse into Montana’s Old West past. Nearby, Bannack State Park, a ghost town that preserves Montana’s rich mining history, is another great family-friendly stop. Together, these destinations offer a blend of adventure and history, making Bozeman an ideal hub for exploring Montana’s natural and cultural treasures.

California’s Central Coast: Carmel and Monterey

With seasonal direct flights on Sun Country running through November 3, it’s also an opportune time to explore California’s central coast. Whether you’re looking to enjoy the charming boutiques and scenic drives in Carmel-by-the-Sea or family-friendly activities in Monterey, this region offers a mix of relaxation, coastal beauty, and exciting experiences for everyone.

Carmel

Carmel offers coastal charm, art galleries, and outdoor activities. I stayed at La Playa Carmel, a boutique hotel with ocean views, just a short walk from the beach and central shopping area. For breakfast, I headed to Stationaery, where I had avocado toast with a soft-boiled egg and indulged in one of their massive cinnamon rolls—so big, I shared it with a stranger!

After breakfast, start your day with some fresh air and a little exercise by biking the scenic 17-Mile Drive through Pebble Beach. Rent e-bikes from Mad Dogs & Englishmen to make the ride more fun for the whole family, while taking in the breathtaking coastal views. Afterward, be sure to reserve time for a leisurely stroll down Ocean Avenue, popping in and out of the unique, independent shops that give Carmel its distinctive charm. For a more relaxed adventure, explore Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, where you can spot otters and seals along the coast, then enjoy a locally sourced steak at Seventh & Dolores to close out your day.

Monterey

Monterey is packed with family-friendly activities, making it a great destination for all ages. Start your day with a visit to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, a must-see for both kids and adults, and then explore Cannery Row and Old Fisherman’s Wharf for shopping and dining. For whale watching, Monterey Bay Whale Watch offers tours with opportunities to spot humpback whales, gray whales, and orcas, depending on the season. Afterward, grab a bowl of clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl at Fish Hopper, known for its delicious chowder and stunning bay views.

For more outdoor adventure, rent a kayak from Monterey Bay Kayaks and paddle through the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, where you’ll encounter otters and seals. Families shouldn’t miss driving along the scenic Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) to enjoy the rugged coastline. While families can easily enjoy this drive, I opted for a solo adventure, renting a classic 1985 Red Ford Mustang Convertible from Monterey Touring Vehicles for the ultimate cruising experience.

To wrap up the trip, I couldn’t resist stopping at In-N-Out Burger for a Double-Double, fries, and a Coke—the best way to end a California road trip.
