Todd About Town: August 2015

They’re off! Minneapolis and St. Paul certainly did not have a false start celebrating the 141st running of the Kentucky Derby in May. From the University Club in St. Paul to The Woman’s Club in Minneapolis, fashion was front and center, and proudly taking its place in the winner’s circle. Churchill Downs reported record attendance, and from my whirlwind of Derby events across the Twin Cities, it appeared no one wanted to be left back at the barn. Entering The Woman’s Club felt like I had just fallen into a Ralph Lauren photo shoot in the Hamptons. Event organizers Mike Brehm and Charlie Hornig contributed a portion of the proceeds to Gillette Children’s Specialty Healthcare and Feed My Starving Children. With no shortage of outlandish, but stylish, hats and seersucker suits, the most beautiful of the beautiful were proudly in attendance—and in great number. Where do these people live? I thought they only appeared during fashion week in the spring and fall, but they appear out of nowhere at these events, too. In the time it takes to sip your mint julep and take a bite of your mini-hot brown, the shortest athletic spectacle of the year—about two minutes—is out of the gates and crossing the finish line. However, I assure you the night was only just beginning for these fillies and stallions!

Going once, going twice, and sold! It was another successful year for the annual alumni art auction at Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Christie’s auctioneer Steven Zick led the audience of 400, including board members Miles Fiterman and Peter Lindahl, through an 18-piece live auction, which raised more than $200,000 for student scholarships. Samantha French, a 2005 MCAD graduate and Brooklyn, New York, resident, was a crowd favorite with her famed body of work focused on her summers spent immersed in northern Minnesota lakes.

See you on the scene!
